Chemical Exposure Linked to Rising Diabetes, Obesity Risk Emerging evidence ties endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure to two of the biggest public health threats facing society – diabetes and obesity, according to the executive summary of an upcoming Scientific Statement issued today by the Endocrine Society.*
Vinyl Windows and doors such as those used in most Tiny Houses On Wheels (THOWs) are one of the things that contribute this in the homes that have limited air to breath as they give off an EDC that mimmics Estrogen. They outgas this chemical for up to 3 years after you install them.
The statement builds upon the Society’s groundbreaking 2009 report, which examined the state of scientific evidence on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and the risks posed to human health. In the ensuing years, additional research has found that exposure is associated with increased risk of developing diabetes and obesity. Mounting evidence also indicates EDC exposure is connected to infertility, hormone-related cancers, neurological issues and other disorders.
EDCs contribute to health problems by mimicking, blocking or otherwise interfering with the body’s natural hormones. By hijacking the body’s chemical messengers, EDCs can alter the way cells develop and grow.*
As I have said in the past, this is bad enough for the adults, but for children who do not have the blood brain barrier to keep them from going straight from lungs to brain, and thus effect their bodies much more, this can lead to early onset diabetes, menstruation cycles, and the feminization of the boys. This is the price one pays for putting in these cheap products where there is very little fresh air to dilute the concentrations of them, particularly when you are heating the home with all the doors and windows closed.
“The evidence is more definitive than ever before – EDCs disrupt hormones in a manner that harms human health,” said Andrea C. Gore, Professor and Vacek Chair of Pharmacology at the University of Texas at Austin and chair of the task force that developed the statement. “Hundreds of studies are pointing to the same conclusion, whether they are long-term epidemiological studies in human, basic research in animals and cells, or research into groups of people with known occupational exposure to specific chemicals.”
The threat is particularly great when unborn children are exposed to EDCs. Animal studies found that exposure to even tiny amounts of EDCs during the prenatal period can trigger obesity later in life. Similarly, animal studies found that some EDCs directly target beta and alpha cells in the pancreas, fat cells, and liver cells. This can lead to insulin resistance and an overabundance of the hormone insulin in the body – risk factors for Type 2 diabetes.
Epidemiological studies of EDC exposure in humans also point to an association with obesity and diabetes, although the research design did not allow scientists to determine causality. The research offers insights into factors driving the rising rates of obesity and diabetes. About 35 percent of American adults are obese, and more than 29 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Society’s Endocrine Facts and Figures report.*
This is hard core in your face proof that the Tiny House makers who use these products and do not tell you are either ignorant or failing to do their due diligence and informing you of the dangers to your health because they do not care about you as much as the money they will make from you buying their THOWs. I have sent copies of the articles I write on this subject to nearly all of the tiny house builders so they have had the chance to learn if they wish. You as a consumer have the right to know before you risk your health, but more important to me, the health of children and the eldrly who’ss immune defences are weaker than young adults. You can make the decision to use aluminum instead if you ask for it, or wood windows from salvaged houses, but if you do not, you are responsible for the consequences and thus should pause before you disregard this well documented information. Please pay attention and consider before you buy or build with these materials.
“Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals during early development can have long-lasting, even permanent consequences,” said Bourguignon. “The science is clear and it’s time for policymakers to take this wealth of evidence into account as they develop legislation.”*
Please, pause and consider this, even in a big house, I have had a couple recently who figured out that the 59 vinyl windows they had installed in their house was the answer to the mystery of how she got cancer with an estogen based tumor that was being operated on the week they came to my tour that told of this issue. Before that they could not figure out what the cause was as no one in the family had estrogen issues, she had not taken supplements, and was not producing extra estrogen in her body. The cancer showed up after the windows were put into her house and she became ill, ultimately getting cancer. Please wake up and consider this before you become another statistic.
