We will be focusing seminars a bit for the next couple months on Baths, Kitchens, and Space Magic Design with Salvage. We had a great gathering for the “Next Salvage Bootcamp” in December 2015 which is now the last Bootcamp of last year. This year we are going to have a few seminars to share the secrets gleaned from designing tiny houses out of 95% Pure Salvage for the last decade. The goal is to show you how to apply Space Magic principles to the Tiny Houses you might one day build out of salvaged materials. The intent is to teach how to maximize use of the limited space by considering the effects of lines, materials, nooks, and multipurpose elements to trick the mind into believing you are in a bigger space than you are experiencing. Integrating vintage materials will allow people who wish to limit outgassing, toxins, and imports to thus create sustainable Organic Cottages.
This Photoblog will focus on the Space Magic Bathroom designs. The next blog will be full of kitchen pictures instead.
With bathrooms it is even more important to be able to keep the claustrophobia at bay and provide light, air, and plenty of elbow room. In the kitchens it is about work space as well as storage space without crowding the counter tops. I will show how to plan and create fold up counters if you need the extra space. Sometimes the kitchen is not important to the design if not intended for full time living, but when it is, the larger space a good kitchen requires is a big factor in determining how small the house can actually be. We have done wonders with 50-75 square feet for a kitchen and 25 sf for baths.
If the interest is in a particular facet of the design, like building Murphy Beds, then we will focus on some of the key interests of the participants with several blocked out general interest sessions. The objective is to give the participants a tour of the evolution of the design techniques, the feel of the spaces from 63 sf to 320 sf on the first floor, and how to maximize the use of the loft spaces. The integration of prized windows and doors as well as the chance to design your own house with parts from the warehouses are all part of the classes for the next few months. We will see if we can help as many people as possible design and set off on their adventure of downsizing for the future using toxin free sustainable building techniques.
The tour and lectures will cover the methods you can use to manifest the Organic sustainable house of your dreams, regardless of the size. I hope to answer the questions and supply the solutions needed to grow your dreams into houses, provide you with downsizing solutions that are sustainable ways of respecting our past and honoring the ancestors who already did all of the hardest work to create these treasures we can now use to build a new generation of housing from if we set our minds to the task and follow up with the action we are capable of taking. Thank you for thinking of this path to home ownership with the generations to follow us in mind, not just self gratification.
The seminars will cover designs of showers and baths, a second seminar on kitchens, and one in general design of the houses using salvage materials. We will have hands on shower building, from the mosaic floors to the walls with roofing tiles. Some seminars will have hands on options to participate and others will be classroom oriented with trips to the warehouses, tours of the houses to explain the application and issues with old doors, windows, and other parts such as lighting and plumbing fixtures. There are many things to know when you set out to design a tiny house built from salvage, and all of them will help you create a house that could last your lifetime, help keep you healthy, and wanting to live there till you leave this body. In the House design class, if someone buys the parts and pieces from the warehouse, like windows, doors, and cabinets, we could design their house while they are here for the seminar with an extra day dedicated to picking out the materials and doing the design for that person.
Schedule for seminars will be….
March 11th, 12th, and 13th Bath and shower installation seminar, hands on all phases.
March 18th, 19th, and 20th Kitchen and bath Space Magic designs
March 25th, 26th, and 27th Space Magic House design, warehouse tours, design around selections.
While these will include some hands on tool experience, they are intended as educational lectures, detailed discussions on the construction of the cabinets, showers, and issues related to them. Starting at about 9:30 each day and running into the dinner hours or after depending on the excitement, interest, and endurance of the participants.
Those who wish to participate in both weekends and the weekday seminars, for a great 10 day get away from the city or where you are now, the third seminar will be free and the Tiny Texas House to stay in half priced.
March 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th will be a General Building and Design Hands ON seminar set with real work times for completing showers, interior trim work, exterior trim work, wiring a Tiny House to minimize Electromagnetic radiation in your home. Seminar may include learning how to construct interior bathroom walls, building window jambs and setting them into the house, as well as other areas of construction depending on the desired focus of the group. If the group is big enough we may have a little campfire in the evening on the last night to share and play some music if someone brings some talent and a guitar.
Pricing will be $150 for each seminar, both the weekend and the full week seminar will have housing on site available for an added cost, with camping, RV, and Tiny Texas Houses for options. We will also have some common eating areas where a stove and ovens will be available for use. Food is not included in the cost but can be added if you wish to participate, contributing food and cooking skills to offset that as well.
The bath house is available for all who come to camp, RV, or stay in one of the nearly off grid houses. We have rates for the houses including sharing if some are interested such that the costs can be as low as $20 each per night for the houses if shared. Local motels and B&B spaces besides ours are also available.
This schedule is tentative and subject to at least 6 people signing up for each seminar or it will be canceled and not offered again if there is not interest.
