Some would hope to see a list of all the reasons but I am only going to cover a few dozen as I go along, for you would not want to keep reading for as long as it takes to detail them all. If you could have nearly all the materials you might want, you could also build with all you could find, and you could build something that fit you and not the other 75% of the people on the planet. Custom to the point of ceiling heights, using loft spaces efficiently, sustainably built with wood, cut a century ago from the forests in America, and preserved so well it will last for centuries more.
Using the Links to videos and Music, to an interview on how to do it, and seeing pictures of the what I have already done to prime the pumps of imagination that others will take to the next level over the rest of this century.
For that reason I “Sing the Song of Salvage” to the public near and far. My favorite version of this poem I wrote years ago, is my son, Adam’s, of course.
Here are some of the pictures and things going on that will be my way of expressing this in a form that really makes more sense. It is the product of my art, the Tiny Texas Houses that have evolved into homes full of Space Magic and energy unlike any other homes built of any size today. Here are some of the key points that are important for me to consider and hope for in the future.
Yes, the adventure at this stage is to see the bigger picture and guide others to do the work needed to make it happen, not to do it yourself always, but to help it manifest using the talents you have learned through life. By leading you will have others who look for inspiration in hard times from those, who like them, are in it for the heart of the adventure and what it will leave behind more than for all the material things that lead to accumulation to the point of destruction. We live in a generation of having so much we could throw so much away and never think of running out.
Now we are running out of time to harvest the great materials of our era, build a new path to a future rather than look back one day and wonder what happened to the products our forefathers gave their lives to harvest and create with. Just because the outward appearance is rough and aged, that the incredible spirit of the wood within still lives on and can protect and love another few generations of humans before its life is gone.
Taking the houses with a past and turning their energies out to recombine with many other houses happy to reform, to shape themselves into a new entity, a virtual composition of cellular tissue nailed and screwed together to bind the RNA, the DNA, the brain of the cell known as the mitochondria still exist in a stasis. They wrap themselves around you with their beautiful lines of life and history to calm the mind and let you rest in peace. They hold the energy of those who live in them like memories imprinted on living paper as they oxidize over another century feeling and inscribing a record through the oxidation of their cellular tissue over a few hundred years after being cut down, and still another couple hundred of years left before their essence is gone.
Sheet rock, vinyl, plastics, carpet, plywood, particle board, formica, and fiberglass don’t feel or look the same when you mimic my house in those materials. Its like comparing junk food to healthy organic foods and has the same effect on your health. We can do better than any blindly to the building industries who make the unhealthy materials, then lobby to require use of unhealthy materials over sustainable alternatives that provide new industry in our country rather than importing new product made out of rapidly diminishing resources around the world. If enough people see this magic, they will find the spark and passion to help in the salvation of millions upon millions of board feet of lumber, but also hardware and windows with infinite amounts of energy already burned to create them.
Here is a great video on how to get some houses to salvage for free or even get paid to take the houses down, thus getting your house that you will built out of durable valuable materials you might not be able to afford to buy otherwise. Human energy transforms it into usable new forms of many sorts. Watch “Treasures out there for free through Salvage”.
The magic is in the human energy it took, from the kids who pulled the coal from the mines or sharped the giant saw blades that cut up the 500 year old trees. It is in the stories of men who worked for decades with two days off a year and families that built their homes from their boards in a day before electricity, cast iron square nails, without nail guns, but with smarts and ingenuity. A story carries on for as long as we can preserve the evidence of its existence so if we let this all go to the dump, then the world will no longer be able to prove we could build with trees so old, and have them last for centuries upon centuries, if we care for them as they care for us. Respect our gifts, our riches, and we shall want for little in a simpler life where who we are is greater than what we own. We can best show our love for the world that that way than based on who we donate money to or how many things we have that we owe money on. Many people can’t take time to further enjoy their lives and family due to paying for the past pleasure with interest, tax, and inflation penalties on their savings. Here a whole family can benefit from an industry friendly to family business operations.
This is a path out of those issues associated with 72,000,000 Baby Boomers aging and retiring. It is a time in their lives right now when older than 52 makes one less employable for many seeking jobs to finally hope to accumulate a savings they had once thought would be enough. Now many are considering seriously downsizing when learning we will be whether they want to or not. It is the how that is critical at this point for it represents the chance to download what knowledge the elders have to share as they formulate a better plan based on being able to see the bigger picture and orchestrate the others toward a path and career they can join together to create instead of becoming employees for big corporations again. Small businesses doing this will open the door to families working together to create houses in a way that provides a job for all the people involved, young and old with incentives no big company would normally provide.
Thinking Tiny at a time like this is great because it frees us up to do all the things we wanted that are out of reach if we are anchored to our heart and passion instead of all the things we have collected.
I get carried away sometimes I suppose, for I foresee a day when so many will be using these treasures to build healthy organic houses with that most will look at those who don’t and have them feel as outside the societal norm as the Tiny Organic House ethos is in our country at present. This is an issue in much of the modern world through the urbanization of our cities, and our world, at this point in our societal evolution, but the effects of waste can be deflected for a couple centuries and by recovering so much of the past instead of taking so much more then we can add generations of life and preservation to what we already have at our fingers waiting to be salvaged and re-manifested into homes.
This experience where we took down an 1880’s two story house with older women and kids in 8 days. The story of this “El Campo Expedition Version of the Song of Salvage” with teh hammers and falling walls as the percussion on the first part of the music and through out the action into the night. This video is touching for me I often see what empowerment can do for people who can then be free to make a positive change in the world by what they do with their passion.
Thanks for following this path as an option that might appeal to your friends, but allow you to break away from a life of consumerism and focus on happiness and good health instead. I hope more will share this option with friends who are facing this transition with a desire to do something special with the rest of their lives.
